Brand new on the release from Dewalt Power Tools... the DWE315 Multi Tool...

This newly launched electric tool is classed as an oscillating multi tool that is capable of undertaking a wide range of tasks whether on the job site or around the home. 

At the time of writing this tool claims to be able to cut through wood, cut through tile grout, act as a power scraper, and also work as a detail sander. 

As with some other brands of "Multi tools" the Dewalt DWE315 resembles a portable angle grinder but that is where similarities stop, the DWE 315 is certainly not an angle grinder! 

When we say it will cut through wood, we don't mean in the same way that a circular saw or jigsaw does. By way of its oscillating blade this multi-tool can cut and slice off small sections of timber in circumstances that you would not imagine! 

Fitting some laminate flooring? Do you need a tool to trim the bottom edge off the skirting board? this Dewalt tool will do it! 

Need to remove old grout from the wall tiles in your bathroom or kitchen? simply fit the grout removal blade... the "side to side" oscillating cutting action will slice through old grout saving you hours of time when carrying out this home improvement job!

This portable power saw manufactured by Dewalt is aimed at the professional and home user that needs a no frills powerful jigsaw that is capable of cutting through a wide range of materials.

With a powerful 701 watt electric motor (110v or 240v) this particular jigsaw is capable of cutting timber up to 135mm in depth. In addition it will saw up to 12mm in steel, and up to 30mm in non ferrous metals. With the correct jigsaw blade fitted it will also cut through all types of plastics both hard and soft.

The Dewalt DW331K Jigsaw has a variable speed control that works in conjunction with its motor delivering a fast cutting speed up to 3100 strokes per minute. This gives this jigsaw the ability to cut fast through most materials, and in particular hard and soft wood.

Dewalt are renowned worldwide of manufacturing professional, tough, reliable power tools. The DW331 jigsaw is no exception.

A main feature of this saw is the pendulum action fitted to the blade roller assembly. This device controls the aggressiveness of its cutting action, taking pressure off the cutting blade when on the downward stroke, allowing the jigsaw to perform a smooth cut. The pendulum action also increases the life of the cutting blades.

The DW331K uses a "full wave electronic speed control" to ensure the units cutting blade maintains a constant speed when under load. This allow the jigsaw to deliver consistent results across a wide range of materials. Another feature on the Dewalt DW331 Jigsaw is the soft start switch. At the start of a cut the jigsaws motor steadily builds speed up, helping the user to achieve greater accuracy than other jigsaws without this feature.

Blades used on the DW331 are standard "T" shaped blades as used in most professional saws of this type. Dewalt also manufacture a range of their own jigsaw blades which are manufactured to the same high standards as their power tools.

For bevel cutting and chamfering this model has an adjustable sole plate (occasionally referred to as the jigsaws shoe) that can adjust to a 45 degree angle in both directions. This is easy to adjust needing no tools to do so, only release of a lever underneath the jigsaw itself.

When cutting large capacity timber some jigsaws have a tendancy for the blade to wander off the cutting line, resulting in a poor finish to the material being sawn. The Dewalt DW331 Jigsaw avoids this by the use of a tapered saw blade roller that keeps the jigsaw blade supported and in line.

As with all Dewalt Powertools, performance, reliability, strength, and useability, are factors and features incorporated at the design stage of every power tool they produce. All these features are incorporated into the DW331 Jigsaw in one form or another.

Keeping Power Tools Casings Clean

Methods For Cleaning The Casings On Cordless And Electric Tools

Most modern battery operated and electric power tools have housings and casings manufactured in metal or one type of plastic or another.

Depending on the country the tool is to be distributed and ultimately sold in, the tools casings will be made using either steel, aluminium, or normally an abs type hard plastic. The design and material used is dictated not only by the type of use the tool is to be put to, but also by the health and safety regulations and laws in the country of sale.

In the USA it has been common practice for manufacturers such as Bosch, Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee, and many others to use a great deal of aluminium in a power tools construction. This gives some of them an "old fashioned" appearance compared with others which have totally plastic clamshells.

One reason as to why this has been common in the USA compared to the UK, and other countries in Europe, is that in the USA the mains electric supply is 110v compared to 240v. In a 240v power tool there is a possible risk of the user getting an electric shock if the tool is faulty and the electric current conducts through it's metal casing.

All "CE" marked tools for sale in the UK and European countries now have to be double insulated hence their casings are mostly made of plastic or similar materials.

Cleaning Plastic Housings On Power Tools

If oil or grease is present on the particular tools casing the tool should first be disconnected from any power source whether it is mains electric, or battery powered. In the case of cordless tools the battery should be completely removed unless it is self contained.

Using soft cloths and a soft cleaning brush (a toothbrush is ideal), a degreasing agent such as the one manufactured under the brand name "Gunk" should be sparingly applied to the surface areas that need attention. Care needs to be taken to ensure none of the degreasing solution enters the cooling or ventilation apertures.

Following the manufacturers instructions with regards to timescales, the degreasing liquid should be given time to work and break down the dirt, oil, and grease present. It may be neccessary to wipe the solution of the tool casing and apply a new layer of solution several times. It all depends on how dirty or soiled the power tool is.

The use of the soft brush, being agitated in various directions will help the cleaning solution do it's job and allow the cleaning solution to penetrate deep into any scratches, gouges, or pit marks that are present.

When you are happy the degreaser has done its job, the tools casing should be given attention with a clean soft cloth to remove any excess liquid and the oil / grease deposits present. The plastic housing (clamshell) should now be completely dried and left for five to 10 minutes for any vapours to evaporate.

The next stage is to apply a cleaning product that will prevent the grease, oil, or dirt building aggresively up in future and help keep the casing clean. There are several products freely available to buy that are suitable but it is important to choose one that has no silicone or polish type surfactants in its make up.

Some of the most effective plastic cleaning products are those that are used in the automotive industry. One being "autoglym" plastic and rubber cleaner. This is an easy to use gel type solution that is long lasting. It is free of silicone, silica, and ammonia. This is ideal for the cleaning of power tools, forming an anti static barrier that protects against moisture, dirt, dust, oil, and plastic staining.
